Interesting, Cool & Useful – Jul 07
Interesting:
- Nurture 1, Nature 0 - In the nature vs. nuture debate, a study of 24,000 Norwegian siblings showed firstborns are more likely to have higher IQs.
- Rubber Ducks - I’m sure you heard of them at some point: 29,000 yellow rubber ducks were spilled into the ocean in 1992. They have since traveled the high seas, visiting Hawaii, Australia and have even traversed a section of the arctic frozen in ice, teaching scientists about ocean currents. They are now expected to end their journey on the coast of England.
- Sophisticated hack of Greek cell-phone system. From sa, a detailed, interesting article about a multi-year hack of Vodaphone’s greek cellphone infrastructure. What state-run hacking might look like.
Cool:
- Outsourced photo touchup - Bob has had a similar idea for a while. Basically, you send a photo and they make it look nice.
- Blow stuff up at summer camp (NY Times) - A summer camp that is all about explosives. Seriously. I wonder if they admit adults…
- An artist’s rendering of children’s monster sketches. An actual artist takes kids’ sketches and embellishes, creating an sinister view into the child’s thinking.
- Light Graffiti - Long exposure photography coupled with clever artists results in some really cool three dimensional artwork.
Useful:
- 2 VERY useful Google Maps features - get directions to a point on the map and drag a route to roads you would prefer. Very, very useful.
- Create a No-login needed NY Times link (used on the NYTimes link above)
- Water Heater Age - Figure out the age of your hot water heater based on its serial number
Hilarious:
whoever sent you to that story about the geek cell phon haking must be a geenus.
Hmmm, not sure I like this higher IQ for older siblings article :)
Love, your (younger) sister
